Tatami is one of the unique cultures of Japan throughout its entire history, while we often share some cultures in common with Asian neighbors.
Since the ancient era, Japan's climate has always been under high level of humidity, unpredictability and severity.
Tatami has survived such harsh climate and fit into our Japanese lifestyle in its entirety. As Japan has historically been recognized as "Country of Golden Ears of Rice", Tatami uses Rice Straws ("Ina-Wara") as its base with weaved Rush Grass ("I-gusa") for the surface cover.
The surface cover is typically decorated by spun gold embroidery.
It is nothing but just a gorgeous, authentic and beautiful rug.
It is a world of Japan's beauty and distinctive creativity with excellent skill and technique of traditional brush paint that is canvassed over Tatami.
Tatami has always been at the center of our living place, despite the fact that various unique Japanese cultures faced extinction when Japan had opened its door to the Western culture in the 19th century and also when the oil shock in 1970s brought scarce petrochemicals.
Despite these historical occurrences, Tatami has proved that it retains superiority over the new technologies that had derived from time to time such as petrochemical fibers.
We would proudly like to introduce to you the fruit of our nature, history and culture: Heart of Japan, the Tatami.
With Tatami, please let us escort you to comfort and harmony of nature by getting away from the bustle of city life, everyday life and cumbersome modern civilization life.
Tatami holds very high capability in thermal insulation, moisture retention and resilience, which all help clean and refresh the air in the room.
A regular sized Tatami, with the dimension of 1,800 mm x 900mm (approx. 3ft x 2ft), can hold up to 500cc (16oz) of moisture/water. This prevents bedewing or dew condensation inside the house; at the same time, this helps keep your skin moderately-moist.
However, due to the fact that Tatami is made from natural material --- Rice Straws as its base with weaved Rush Grass for the surface cover ---too much humidity may cause damage to Tatami itself.
Regularly, material life of Tatami is about 10 years, while too much moisture may significantly shorten Tatami's life by causing molds to both the inside and surface.
Tatami first appears in bright green colour, then turns to golden brown and further to barky brown.
Sterilization process after natural-soil-based tincturing process brings Tatami's original green colour.
The gradual degradation of colour is caused by being exposed to UV light in everyday life.
The degradation usually would not change anything on Tatami in its quality or its nature until Tatami turns totally into barky and dark brown at which it will usually have passed 10 years or more.
By the time Tatami turns into such very dark brown is now high time that you would have to replace Tatami with new one.
[Reminder] --- These days more often are Tatamis seen that seems to appear as beautifully green as in its original condition, as often seen at some hotels or Judo competition or the training places.
These Tatamis are quite often made of petrochemical materials like vinyl.
They will neither fade nor cause any molds; however, they too holds no natural refreshing scent or holds moisture retention capability at all...
Due to restrictions by laws and treaties, the export of the traditionally-manufactured (organic) TATAMI could be limited.
For example:
- Countries we CAN EXPORT: USA, CANADA, etc
- Countries we CANNOT EXPORT: AUSTRALIA, etc
{Attention}
For those countries which prohibit export, we deliver vinyl-made Tatami (not the traditional Tatami with Igusa-straw).
The vinyl-based TATAMI is the same as JUDO-mat.
